    The North American Car, Utility and Truck of the Year are a set of automotive awards announced at a news conference each January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The jury consists of no more than 60 automotive journalists from the USA and Canada. In 2016, a Board of Directors was created and the award became a 501 6(c) corporation. The new Board consists of: Mark Phelan, President; Matt DeLorenzo, Vice President; and Lauren Fix, Secretary / Treasurer. For 2017 a new category was added to this award: Utility, with the Chrysler Pacifica the first winner.

    right The International Car of the Year (ICOTY) awards are one of several annual "car of the year" awards around the world for new automobile models judged to be the best of their generation. This one is presented by the United States magazine Road & Travel Magazine. Awards are given under ten different categories to new vehicles manufactured internationally and available on the US market. The awards ceremony is attended by 600 industry leaders and media on the evening before Press Days at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS). The awards have been presented annually since 1997.

It is among the largest auto shows in North America. The Great Lakes Megalopolis and Metro Detroit area which the NAIAS serves is home to the "Big Three" American automakers, Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors.
