  • Gulfstream Park Mile Stakes


    The Gulfstream Park Mile Stakes (formerly known as the Gulfstream Park Handicap) is a race for thoroughbred horses run at Gulfstream Park each year. The race is open to horses age four and up, willing to race one mile on the dirt. A Grade II event run in early March, it currently offers a purse of $300,000. American Graded Stakes Committee status: Grade II : 1973-1974, 2003-present Grade 1 : 1975-2002In 1948 Rampart became the first of female horse to win the Gulfstream Park Handicap, defeating Armed, the previous year's winner of American Horse of the Year honors. In1997, Barbara Minshall became the first female trainer to win the race in its fifty-two-year history. As part of his record seven wins of this race, Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey won this race four times in a row from 1995 through 1998. This race was set at one mile in 2009.

    The Pegasus World Cup is an American Thoroughbred horse race whose first running was on January 28, 2017 at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. It is run over the dirt at the distance of miles (9 furlongs) and is open to horses four years old and up. The Grade I rating was assumed from the Donn Handicap. With a purse of $12 million for its inaugural running, the Pegasus World Cup surpassed the Dubai World Cup as the richest horse race in the world. The purse was subsequently increased to $16 million in 2018 but reduced to $9 million in 2019. Entrants carry with a three pound allowance for fillies and mares. Horses that run without the use of the pre-race medication furosemide (more commonly known as Lasix) receive an allowance of five pounds. The race is named for the mythical horse, a 110-foot statue of which stands at Gulfstream Park.

Added to the racing schedule in 1952, the Grade I race is run at miles on the dirt for a purse currently set at $1 Million.
