    Shopee (Traditional Chinese: 蝦皮購物) is an e-commerce platform headquartered in Singapore under Sea Group (previously known as Garena), which was founded in 2009 by Forrest Li. Shopee first launched in Singapore in 2015, and since expanded its reach to Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. It serves users in Southeast Asia and Taiwan to buy and sell products online. Due to the mobile and social element built within the concept, Shopee was described as one of the “5 disruptive ecommerce startups we saw in 2015” by Tech In Asia.

    Singles' Day or Guanggun Jie () is a holiday popular among young Chinese people that celebrate their pride in being single. The date, November 11th (11/11), was chosen because the number "1" resembles an individual who is alone. The holiday has also become a popular date to celebrate relationships, with over 4,000 couples being married in Beijing on this date in 2011, compared to an average of 700 a day. The holiday has become the largest offline and online shopping day in the world, with Alibaba shoppers exceeding 168.2 billion yuan (US$25.4 billion) in spending during the 2017 celebration. Rival JD.com hosts an eleven day shopping festival as well, which garnered US$19.1 billion, bringing the Chinese total to US$44.5 billion.

    Lazada Group is a Southeast Asian e-commerce company founded by Rocket Internet in 2012, and owned by Alibaba Group. As of 2014, Lazada Group operated sites in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam and had raised approximately US$647 million over several investment rounds from its investors such as Tesco, Temasek Holdings, Summit Partners, JPMorgan Chase, Investment AB Kinnevik and Rocket Internet. Its sites launched in March 2012, with a military model of selling inventory to customers from its own warehouses. In 2013 it added a marketplace model that allowed third-party retailers to sell their products through Lazada's site; the marketplace accounted for 65% of its sales by the end of 2014. As of April 2016, Alibaba Group bought controlling stake in Lazada to support Alibaba's expansion plans in Southeast Asia. As of August 2018, Lazada is the largest e-commerce operator in Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines, based on average monthly web visits.
