The offering priced on January 29, 2015; the initial price of its shares was at $21 immediately rising by 123% to $47 on their first day of trading. Shake Shack operates more than 200 locations both domestically and internationally, typically located in stand-alone restaurants and shopping malls. Shake Shack also operates in stadiums, including Citi Field in New York City, Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., Minute Maid Park in Houston, and the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It also operates 3 airport locations in New York, Los Angeles, and Dubai. There is also an outlet at the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Many Steak 'n Shake restaurants are open 24 hours a day, seven days per week. The menu features primarily burgers and hand-dipped milkshakes, though other entrees, side items, and drinks are also available. The corporation's slogan "Famous for Steakburgers" refers to its most prominent food item, the "Steakburger", so called because it was originally made from a mixture that included T-bone, sirloin, and round steaks. The "Steak" in the restaurant name comes from that menu item.

The first Five Guys restaurant opened in 1986 in Arlington County, Virginia, and by 2001, the chain had expanded to five locations throughout the Washington, D.C. metro area. In early 2003, the chain began franchising, beginning a period of rapid expansion. In a year and a half, permits had been sold for over 300 franchised locations. As of 2016, Five Guys had over 1,500 locations open worldwide, with 1,500 locations under development. The company was the fastest-growing fast food chain in the United States, with a 32.8% sales increase from 2010 to 2011.
